Replacing a Window Screen: Step-by-Step Guide

Yvette Silva

Not sure whether your window screen needs repair or full replacement? Here are five clear signs it's time to replace your window screen, plus tips on choosing the right replacement.

5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Window Screen

1. Visible Holes or Tears

If your screen has holes or tears — even small ones — insects and pests can enter your home. Small holes can sometimes be patched, but if there are multiple holes or the mesh is generally degraded, replacement is the better option.

2. Bent or Warped Frame

A bent or warped frame prevents the screen from fitting properly in the window opening. This can allow gaps where insects can enter and may make it difficult to open and close the window. Frame damage usually requires full replacement.

3. Brittle or Faded Mesh

Over time, fiberglass mesh can become brittle and faded from UV exposure. Brittle mesh tears easily and no longer provides effective protection. If your screen mesh crumbles or tears when touched, it's time for replacement.

4. Rust or Corrosion on the Frame

Aluminum frames can oxidize over time, especially in coastal environments. Significant rust or corrosion weakens the frame and can cause the mesh to separate from the frame. Replacement is the most effective solution.

5. Screen No Longer Fits Properly

If your screen has become loose in its track or no longer fits snugly in the window opening, it may have stretched or warped. A properly fitting screen is essential for effective insect protection.

Choosing the Right Replacement Screen

  • Standard fiberglass — affordable and effective for most applications
  • Aluminum mesh — stronger and more durable
  • Pet-resistant polyester — up to 7x stronger than standard fiberglass
  • Solar mesh — reduces heat gain and UV exposure
  • Fine mesh (allergy) — filters pollen and small insects
